Challenge background
In Ghana, an estimated 110,000 people are deaf or hard of hearing. Despite efforts to promote inclusive education, many deaf students struggle in mainstream schools due to communication barriers. Sign language interpretation services are scarce, especially in rural areas, leading to educational disparities.
Key factors influencing deaf education in Ghana include:
- Limited availability of trained sign language interpreters
- Lack of sign language knowledge among teachers and hearing students
- Scarcity of educational resources in Ghanaian Sign Language (GSL)
- Cultural stigma associated with deafness
- Limited technological infrastructure in many schools
Current solutions often rely on human interpreters, which are costly and not scalable to meet nationwide needs.
The problem
The core problem this project addresses is the communication gap between deaf students and their hearing teachers and peers in Ghanaian schools, leading to educational inequalities. The key issues are:
- Language Barrier: Lack of real-time communication between GSL users and non-signers.
- Resource Constraints: Shortage of human interpreters, especially in rural areas.
- Educational Content: Limited availability of signed educational materials.
- Social Integration: Difficulties in fostering inclusive classroom environments.
- Scalability: Challenge of providing interpretation services across all schools.
The specific problem we aim to solve is:
How can we develop an AI-powered system that provides real-time, bi-directional translation between Ghanaian Sign Language and spoken language, which can be easily deployed in schools across Ghana to facilitate inclusive education?
Goal of the project
- Develop an AI model capable of translating between GSL and spoken English/Twi with at least 90% accuracy.
- Create a mobile/tablet application for real-time sign language translation in classroom settings.
- Implement the system in at least 50 schools across Ghana, including rural areas.
- Increase the classroom participation rate of deaf students by 50% within one year of implementation.
