Assessing the Impact of Covid-19 on Crime Rates in Italy Using Machine Learning

This Omdena Local Chapter Challenge runs for 4 weeks and is a unique experience to try and grow your skills in a collaborative and safe environment with a diverse mix of people from all over the world.
You will work on solving a local problem, initiated by Omdena Milan, Italy Chapter.
The problem
Machine learning tools can further our understanding of Covid-19’s effects on crime. These effects can include both the “short-term” impacts and “long-term” effects that might to this day not be fully understood. As such, problems to be addressed may include:
- Did lockdowns reduce or increase crime rates overall?
- In which areas and regions did these changes prove to be most dramatic?
- Were certain specific types of crimes less frequent while others (such as domestic violence) more both at the time of the pandemic and today?
- How has the “geography” of crime changed overall?
- What specific factors, if any, can we isolate that explain these changes?
- Are there any significant differences in how they affected urban rather than rural areas?
- What can we predict about these trends in the near and mid-term?
The goals
- To identify the impact of Covid-19 and Covid-19 containment policies such as lockdowns on crime in Italy.
- Build ML models to identify, measure and predict such factors.
- Predict which trends are likely to last and which are more transient.
