Identifying and Qualifying Opportunities to Create New Energy Communities in Portugal

Challenge background

The path to a more sustainable world is one with more clean and distributed energy accessible to all. The raise of renewables energy poses however numerous challenges. In the electric grid demand and response need to be balanced at all times and it is difficult to do so when our energy supply is inherently intermittent and demand unpredictable.

The problem

There is a huge potential for energy communities in Portugal to bring clean and distributed energy cheaply to remote villages. Companies and municipalities are lacking a tool to identify and qualify these opportunities.

Goal of the project

  • Identify and quantify and localize the demand for energy in Portugal.
  • Use map visualization to cross-reference demand and energy supply.
  • Classify opportunities to create new energy communities.
