This Omdena Impact Hub Challenge runs for 6 weeks and is a unique experience to try and grow your skills in a collaborative and safe environment with a diverse mix of people from all over the world.

You will work on solving a local problem, initiated by Aswan, Egypt Chapter.

The problem

Communities living in urban areas and near large industries face huge health and environmental risk due to greenhouse emissions. This exposes the communities to various respiratory diseases which put a financial burden on them. Measuring industry emissions and their impact on the environment and population is a complex process that requires the collaboration of various stakeholders, including industry, government, and civil society. KRCS seeks to make use of a flexible approach through the use of AI to understand the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on climate change and public health.

The output of the project will enable KRCS to work with relevant stakeholders and policymakers in identifying and implementing mitigation measures to reduce emissions and minimize their impact on the environment and population. Further, these insights will be used to create public education and awareness campaigns contributing to more informed and evidence-based decision-making around environmental and public health issues.

The goals

  • Develop an AI-powered emissions monitoring system capable of identifying emission hotspots in urban areas and near industrial sites in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • Integrate various data sources, including sensor data, satellite imagery, weather forecasts, and other relevant information, to track emissions in real-time and provide early warnings of potential environmental and health impacts.
  • Analyze the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on climate change and public health, identifying key areas of concern for communities living in the proximity of emission hotspots.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders, including industries, government agencies, and civil society organizations, to share insights and data for more effective emissions reduction strategies.
  • Provide actionable recommendations and mitigation measures to minimize the impact of emissions on the environment and the health of the population.
  • Create public education and awareness campaigns based on the findings to promote informed decision-making and sustainable practices in addressing environmental and public health issues.
