Creating an AI-powered platform that simplifies the process of carbon project development, promotes accessibility, and empowers users with the necessary tools and guidance to contribute to carbon mitigation efforts effectively. In this 8-week challenge, you will join a collaborative team of 50 AI engineers from all around the world.

The problem

The problem that this Omdena-Transitry project is trying to address is the complexity, time-consuming nature, and high cost associated with developing carbon projects. As the carbon market expands, there is a growing demand for reliable and scalable tools to facilitate the development of carbon projects. However, the current process of developing such projects is challenging and requires specialized expertise, which is limited and expensive.

Developing a carbon project can take anywhere from 1 to 4 months, involving intricate procedures and technical knowledge that only a few specialists possess (a select few out of 1 million individuals). These experts charge substantial fees, often exceeding 1 million for a 10-year project. This high cost and limited availability of specialized expertise act as barriers, preventing many individuals and organizations from participating in the carbon market.

This project aims to address these challenges by building an AI platform that streamlines the entire process of carbon project development. The platform will empower users with the necessary tools and guidance to develop carbon projects with ease, eliminating the need for extensive technical expertise. By leveraging AI technology, the project seeks to democratize access to carbon project development, making it more accessible to a wider range of individuals and organizations.

By providing a user-friendly AI platform, the project intends to enable more stakeholders to participate in the carbon market. This increased participation can contribute to the growth and success of the carbon market and, in turn, accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. With streamlined processes and reduced barriers to entry, more sustainable projects can be developed and implemented, making a positive impact on climate change mitigation efforts.

Here, the focus will be on key carbon registries such as Verra, VCS, Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards, Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SD VISta), Plastic Credits, Gold Standard, and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the UNFCCC. These registries provide a wealth of project-related information and data, which will be instrumental in training the AI models for the platform. By leveraging the knowledge available in these registries, the AI platform can offer valuable insights and guidance to users, simplifying the carbon project development process and making it more accessible to a broader audience.

The project goals

In this second round of the project, we’ll continue the amazing work the team did and pick up from where they left off this time powered by the rich data that was collected.

The goal as previously will be to develop an AI-powered platform that streamlines the process of generating project design documents for various carbon projects and provides feasibility analysis and guidance to users.

Project Scope:

  • Refining the work from the previous phase to create an AI platform leveraging LLMs to generate project design documents for various carbon projects, including reforestation, afforestation, agroforestry, and soil carbon sequestration.
  • The team will leverage the data that was collected and processed from the previous phase and the knowledge that was gained to improve and optimize the existing demo.
  • The platform will also incorporate machine learning algorithms to analyze project feasibility and suggest appropriate carbon registries based on project type and location.

Why join? The uniqueness of Omdena AI Innovation Challenges

A collaborative experience you never had in your working life! For the next eight weeks, you will not only build AI solutions to make a real-world impact but also go through an entire data science project lifecycle. This covers problem scoping, data collection, and preparation, as well as modeling for deployment.

And the best part is that you will join a global and collaborative team of changemakers. Omdena AI Challenges are not a competition or hackathon but a real-world project that will take your experience of what is possible through collaboration to a new level.
